Don't Get Lost in the Magic World of Big Models

It is important not to get lost in "the magic world of big models." Because sometimes, a simple Excel sheet prepared using basic strength of materials formulas can be more valuable than a FE model with millions of DOFs.
Strength of Materials, Elasticity Theory, and the Finite Element Method are not alternatives to each other. They are engineering tools built on top of one another.
- Strength of Materials provides simplified assumptions, fast solutions, and engineering intuition.
- Elasticity provides more comprehensive physics and more realistic representation, but has analytical solution limitations.
This is where numerical methods enter the picture — complex geometries and boundary conditions become solvable with the Finite Element Method (FEM).
A common mistake
Many engineers assume that moving from Strength of Materials → Elasticity → FEM → FEA automatically means moving toward a "better" method. Not always — because simple equations still provide extremely valuable insight.
For example, the bending stress formula σ = Mc/I tells you that increasing the area moment of inertia reduces stress. The natural frequency formula of a 1-DOF system, ω = √(k/m), tells you that increasing stiffness increases natural frequency, and increasing mass decreases it. These simple relationships create powerful intuition while designing, analyzing, and testing systems.
Order-of-magnitude checks
Hand calculations provide order-of-magnitude estimates. If you estimate the first bending mode of a missile using a simplified beam approach and obtain approximately 50 Hz, you probably should not expect your simulation to show 5 Hz or 500 Hz.
And sometimes, 50% confidence in 10 minutes is more valuable than 99% confidence in one month. Because engineering is not only about finding the correct answer — it's about solving the right problem with the right tool at the right accuracy level.
Conclusion
University GPA may not always be critical. But developing engineering intuition through those simple formulas absolutely is.
